Eyes are one of the most important organ in the human body and vision is a gift to be cherished. But many people ignore the importance of eye care and do not pay proper attention towards eye care. Being aware of the importance of protecting your vision can help you to avoid the future problem related to eyes. Maintaining good vision and taking care of your eyes is quite simple task for vast majority. Here we will learn the art of the taking care of our eyes and ensuring perfect eye sight. But first we will discuss about how the eye works. The basic function of eye is often compared to a simple camera.

How the Eye Works

  • Light travels in straight lines but it bends when it strikes another transparent medium. The cornea is the curved front surface of the eye. When the ray of light strikes this curved surface it blends. It is here that most of the refraction happens. The refractive index is approximately 1.376 which is equivalent to that of plastic or glass.
  • The iris is the part of the eye and it automatically adjusts to control the amount of light entering in the eye.
  • The pupil is the hole in the iris through which the light enters. It becomes smaller when you are in bright light and it enlarges when there is less light; hence while to allow the maximum possible light to enter.
  • The lens is the transparent structure inside the eye that focuses light rays onto the retina. It is flexible and changes its shape and focal length. When we look at close up, the muscles drag in and the lens gets fat and round. When we look at far away, the lens is pulled flat by little muscles. This way the eye is able to look at things that near as well as far.
  • The retina is the nerve that lines the back of the eye. When eye focuses on an object, all the light rays from a single point on to object are turned headed for a single point on your retina. The strange thing is that the images are reversed while they impose on the retina. This is because the rays of light are bent by a double curved lens. The retina senses light and generates impulses that are sent through to optic nerve to the brain.
  • The macula is a small area in the retina which contains special light sensitive cells. The macula helps us to see fine details clearly.
  • The optic nerve is the nerve which connects the eye to the brain. The optic nerve holds the impulses created by retina to the brain which interprets them as images.
  • Through the time this happens you haven’t just seen but you have perceived. Vision is not as simple as we think. Two people look at the same scene but see different things. We indentify things with different relatives. Like this seeing is so closely connected to the understanding of what is seen.

Eye Care for Preserving Good Sight

With some basic care we can preserve good eye sight.

  • Avoid rubbing the eyes often or squeezing them because this meddling with the eyes can harm your eye sight so avoid it as far as possible. If there is significant irritation in the eyes then consult to the doctor.
  • Avoid looking directly at the welding electrodes or any other source of very bright intense light and also avoid direct sun light to the eyes because it cause harmful effects to the eyes. Try to watch television by recommended distance which is a minimum of six screen lengths from the set. Watching television everyday for very long hours can cause eyestrain.
  • If you have diseases like hypertension and diabetes then see your eye doctor without delay because the eyes are very often damaged in these conditions. So early detection and treatment is crucial.
  • Excessive use of eyeliners or other makeup material could irritate and cause problems for the eye.

Importance of Annual Eye Examinations

Annual eye examinations for everyone are strongly recommended. By annual examination you can preserve your eye sight and it also serves as a precaution. You can get the several benefits from annual eye examination which includes

  • Detects near and far sightedness at an early stage
  • Detects cataracts
  • Detect serious disease like glaucoma

Eye check-ups are crucial for Children

In case of children the annual eye examination is more important. More than 75% of child’s learning in the growing years is accomplished by vision. Even a slight destruction in the child’s vision can cause significant delay in the child’s intellectual development. While all children need regular eye check-ups, there are certain groups of children who are at greater risk which include:

  • Children born prematurely
  • Children who have parents with health problems such as diabetes
  • Children who have had eye injuries even if the injuries have occurred years ago
  • Children born into a family that has history of eye problems such as childhood cataracts, mal-aligned eyes or eye tumors.

Some common eye disease symptoms are:

  • Diminishing vision. This may be gradual or sudden, persistent or intermittent
  • Pain within the eyes or headache
  • Double vision
  • Redness and irritation in the eyes
  • Spots in vision
