When we visited the doctor, he suggested a mix of medicine and lifestyle changes to my husband. Though the life of these ulcers were too short so it wasn’t a big worry but the frequency was popping a new ulcer was bit high. What we learnt was a combined approach of preventive steps to avoid canker sores and if appears then steps to treat these sores.

Prevention always comes before Cure, hence let’s take a look at major preventive steps by which one can avoid developing Canker Sores.

1. Some people have sensitive skin inside the mouth and they don’t tolerate spicy or acidic food items. In such case avoid all the food items which may irritate your mouth. These food items could be spicy foods, acidic fruits and vegetables and citrus fruits.

2. Chewing a gum can sometimes develop irritation and damage inner skin of your mouth, if gum chewing causes irritation then avoid it completely.

3. Brushing techniques are very important. Choose a toothbrush which is very soft and made for sensitive mouth. And brush very gently so that you don’t hurt inner skin of your mouth.

4. Any bacteria infection can cause mouth ulcer, so rinsing your mouth frequently is very important to prevent canker sores. Develop a habit of rinsing your mouth with lukewarm salt mixed water or mild mouthwash and make sure you rinse your mouth thrice a day.

5. If you have canker sore, then dab small amount of milk on canker sores, it will give instant healing. Try over the counter products to ease the pain of canker sores. Applying small ice cube on ulcer will also help easing pain.

6. If you are developing canker sores due to nutrition deficiencies then watch what you eat, include all nutritious food items in your meals especially food items that provide iron, folic acid and vitamin B12.

7. Some people have habit of chewing food and talking at the same time, that cause unwanted teeth bite inside the mouth which causes canker sores. So, just avoid this habit.

8. Stress is another reason of canker sores, so make sure you don’t take much stress and if you are already under influence of stress then try out various stress reduction techniques.
