In earlier posts the emphasis was to understand Arrhythmias and also focus on root causes, signs and symptoms and types of Arrhythmias. But the situation is bit different when these symptoms of Arrhythmias found in pregnant woman. Pregnant woman develops completely different type of symptoms and complications because of sudden changes in physical and hormonal structure. So, when it comes to pregnant women, it becomes difficult to diagnose and treat Arrhythmias.
Firstly, when it comes to woman, there are several differences can be found compared to a man that will be essential information to know when it comes to Arrhythmias in women, especially in pregnant women.
Women have faster and rapid heart rates compared to men and shorter SNRT than men. Additionally women will have longer QT intervals and long QT syndrome. There are several such symptoms which your cardiologist will confirm after brief examination. But you should note that gender differences will definitely play a role when it comes to any complications related to the heart.
Pregnancy is a complex situation for a woman because it will cause major hormonal changes, for example rise in estrogen and beta human chorionic gonadotropin will be observed during pregnancy.
During pregnancy, your intravascular volume will increase and that will result in augmenting the preload on the ventricles and that will also increase the atrial and ventricular size. There is also probability of increased heart rate which may be arrhythmogenic.
If you are a pregnant woman and facing any problem with irregular heartbeats or heart rates or any other symptoms of uneasiness in heart then you should consult your cardiologist. Cardiologist will briefly examine you and assure if it’s real Arrhythmias or just common uneasiness due to pregnancy. In pregnancy it’s common to have uneasy breaths due to major physical changes.
Developing casual palpitations is very common in pregnant woman. This happens because your body will face certain change in its physique and blood pressure and that will cause palpitations during pregnancy. Lightheadedness, fatigue and weakness are common symptoms of pregnancy and the same can be felt in case of Arrhythmias. But as pregnancy matures these palpitations will go away. In my case these palpitations went away after third trimester.
In pregnancy high heart rates (tachycardia) is also a common symptom as your heart rate will go up. But if your heart rate is rising and ranging around 120 to 200 beats per minute which is far above than maximum limits of 100 beats per minute then its bit danger situation. If this situation arises then you should consult your cardiologist who will perform certain tests like EP study to assure the presence of Arrhythmias.
If you have developed Arrhythmias during pregnancy, the severity of Arrhythmias may depend upon variety of factors like history of Arrhythmias in you or your family and presence of other heart related disease. The treatment of Arrhythmias will depend upon your individual diagnosis and frequency and duration of symptoms. There are also a chance of developing Arrhythmias in the newborn infant, while the need of medication should be decided only after checking history of Arrhythmias and any other heart related disease in mother.
