Kombucha is fermented beverage in which major portion is tea. This drink is made with tea, sugar, yeast and bacteria. Kombucha tea is known for its anecdotal health benefits for medicinal purposes. Kombuchs is now easily available in market and it can be also made at home by fermenting tea using a mass of bacteria and yeast which forms the kombucha culture. Kombucha tea is sometimes called as mashroom tea but surprisingly kombucha is not a mashroom but it’s a colony of yeast and bacteria.
Kombucha tea can be made by adding the colony to tea and sugar and allowing the mix to ferment. The liquid that is end result of this process contains Vitamin B, Vinegar and some other chemical compounds.
Health Benefits of Kombucha Tea
Producers of Kombucha often claim that kombucha will detoxify the body and energize the mind, but there is no supporting scientific evidence of these health benefits of kombucha. There are claims that kombucha will aide to cancer recovery, increasing energy, sharpened eyesight, improved skin elasticity, joint recovery, and digestion.
It has been believed that Kombucha tea has certain health benefits like improving digestion and liver functioning, stimulating immune system and preventing diseases like cancer but there is no scientific evidence yet to prove these health benefits of kombucha tea.
On other side, there has been reports of some proven adverse effects of kombucha tea like upset stomach, allergic reactions and infections.
In majority of cases, Kombucha tea is made in homes in nonsterile conditions, it makes the contamination likely. In case of ceramic pots are used for brewing, it can lead to lead poisoning, that is because the acids in the tea may leach lead from ceramic glaze.
In short, there isn’t any scientific evidence of health benefits of kombucha tea, but at the same time there are some reported damages it can cause to your health. Therefor the wise approach is to avoid kombucha tea until there is solid scientificaly proven health benefits are available.
Composition of Kombucha Tea
Kombucha tea contains multiple varity of bacteria and yeast along with amino acids, organic acids, active enzymes and polyphenols produced by these microbes. Finished kombucha may contain Acetic acid which is mildly antibacterial, Alcohol, Vitamin B, Butyric acid, Gluconic acid, Malic acid, Lactic acid, Oxalic acid, Isnic acid. Alcohol level in kombucha is less than 0.5% that classifies kombucha as non alcoholic beverage.

Many firms are selling Kombucha tea bags and capsules purportedly containing some form of dry Kombucha.Kombucha extract is another product that is being sold in market. These Kombucha extracts are small amounts of Kombucha Tea that has turned vinegary. Some firms are selling Kombucha mashroom cultures based on their size where larger mashrooms are prized high. The size of mashroom culture doesn’t matter at all, small mushroom cultures will ferment a new batch of prepared tea just as well as larger mushroom cultures.
